Lessons from Chris Farley

The other evening, JD and I laughed our asses off for a full hour.  We were indulging in some old Chris Farley skits from his days on SNL.

Damn!  That stuff is so frickin’ hilarious!

While I was enjoying some hearty belly laughs that night, I realized one huge reason why Chris Farley was so damn funny…

He never held anything back!!

Chris was always committed 100% to whatever character, persona, role, or skit he took on.  No matter how embarrassing, unattractive, silly, or dangerous.  Each time Saturday Night Live aired, there was an unmatched effort to provide the most over-the-top experience he could.  I mean, do you remember all the furniture and sets he ruined when he’d throw his body into a fall?!  Do you remember the dance scenes (Chippendales!) and the highly physical rants?  That man put on a fantastic show, that’s for sure.

Here’s a sweet link to a great vid documenting his famous character, Matt Foley.

And even though Chris wasn’t the healthiest of people (which is only important because I’m mentioning him on a fitness/nutrition/healthy lifestyle blog), I think his approach to his craft is a great example for how we should approach our own lives.  How so, you ask?

I believe we should always be actively attempting to improve ourselves… BUT we need to be proud and accepting of who we are as well.  We need to recognize our strengths and play those up whenever we can.

We need to put effort into our actions, but we also need to know when to laugh at ourselves.

We need to attack our goals with ferocity and focus.  Something might frighten us if we’ve never attempted it before (like beginning a Badass exercise program or changing the eating habits in which we’ve grown so accustomed), BUT we have to commit to the changes (throw ourselves into the situation a la Chris Farley, if you will) regardless of our fear.

We can’t hold anything back in this lifetime!  We must go for everything we desire.  It’s not gonna happen otherwise…

Another big lesson we get from Chris Farley is that life is short.  We’re not here forever.  And we never know when the ride is gonna end.

So why not live with passion and gusto??

Why not break down the walls in front of us and climb up over the obstacles toward our dreams??

Why not commit to action, no matter how scared we are??

Why not throw caution to the wind and put forth our full effort??

Just like Chris Farley’s goofy, lovable, absolutely crazy characters in his movies and on SNL… let’s go for it! ;)

No holding back...
